Hello, my name is Rachael, and I hold a First-Class Honours BA in English Literature from the University of Exeter.
Whilst at university, my love of thorough research earnt me the nickname "Belt and Braces". I would say I'm a good-humoured person with a passion for literary history.
As a tutor, I encourage students to approach literature within its cultural context. This brings the text to life and allows the student to fully understand its place in the world. We might discuss the relationship between Elizabethan music and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or consider the experiments of Luigi Galvani alongside our reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This historicist approach has resulted in some really exciting essays from previous pupils, which have stood out of the crowd.
Over the past five years, I have taught 1000+ tutorials with MyTutor and feel that my extensive resource collection — across both GCSE and A-level exam boards — allows me to make the lesson space a varied and exciting place to learn. I am meticulous in my preparation of material and enjoy tailoring lesson plans to the individual.
I am a patient person who I hope can be an empathetic tutor to your son/daughter as someone who once found writing under time constraints very stressful.
I aim for an exploratory tutorial that balances exam technique (where applicable) with a more creative discussion of literary concepts, cultural context, and interpretation of themes.
At the beginning of each session, the tutee will be encouraged to demonstrate knowledge of the previous week's content. Where appropriate, I will also set independent research and essay tasks as homework to be marked in my own time. This helps me monitor progress.

It is essential for me to get a feel for the personal objective of the student/parent in order to tailor content to learning requirements. My teaching style is relaxed and friendly; I want the student to be comfortable expressing curiosity and asking any questions they might have.
Experience teaching to the following exam board specifications: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, Eduqas, Cambridge IGCSE, Hong Kong DSE
