About me
Hello! I studied Music at the University of Cambridge, with a particular focus on historical musicology, and graduated with a first class result in 2020. I am especially interested in the relationship between religion and music in Europe during the sixteenth century. While I was at university, I played the flute in several notable orchestras and held a choral scholarship in my college choir.
Although my degree area was quite specific, I really love learning and am interested in a wide range of subjects, including science and history. I love being a tutor because it is so varied, and it allows me to teach and discuss so many different subjects everyday!
My tutoring experience
I am a professional tutor, currently working both as a private tutor and with one of the UK's largest maths and English tuition companies. I have tutored children aged 3-16 in maths, English, phonics, biology, chemistry, and combined science. I also run an 11+ preparation course for a tuition company, which prepares students for every aspect of the exams, including verbal and non-verbal reasoning. I have experience working online and in-person, and have seen excellent academic progress and increased confidence in my regular students. I estimate that I have completed over 180 hours of tuition so far.
My approach to tutoring is tailored to each individual student based on their level of learning, goals, and individual learning style. I love getting to know my students and discovering what works best for them. Students preparing for exams, such as 11+ admissions and GCSEs, might expect sessions to be based on a framework of 'explanation, scaffolded practice, exam-style questions'. Working closely with the relevant exam board specification, we cover any key definitions, equations...
Working closely with the relevant exam board specification, we cover any key definitions, equations, and techniques for the topic before moving onto supported and individual practice. I encourage a constant dialogue throughout the sessions, so that I can check my students' understanding. I teach my students to tackle unfamiliar questions with a highly logical approach, using their existing knowledge and problem-solving skills.
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the MyTutor team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 8 becomes a tutor on our site.
